Castro welcomes "new generation" of leaders of Cuba, but called old guard - Christian Science Monitor

Mexico City

The theme of the sixth Congress of the party in Cuba seemed clear enough: President Raul Castro, opened the Summit Saturday saying that a new generation of Cuban politicians was necessary to ensure that the Socialist Revolution.

Even former Cuban leader Fidel Castro seemed to embrace the message. "The new generation is called to correct and change everything without hesitation that must be corrected and changed", he wrote in the journal of State Granma.

But at the time where as the wrapped Congress Tuesday, the new leaders have been appointed to the Communist Party, and none of the three top positions went to any person under the age of 78, leaving the old guard in power and thwart these hungry Cubans of a political reorganization.

"Raul Castro said they had to bring new leaders, bring the new generation," says Wayne Smith, senior fellow at the Center for International policy in Washington and former American diplomat in Cuba. "But he appointed its long date no. 2 No. 2".

The Congress is important because Fidel Castro was appointed not the head of the party for the first time since its formation in 1965. Instead, Raul Castro will formally assume this role.

Cuban watchers were anxious to see if a young leader could be chosen as a position for a long time of Raul Castro as Second Secretary. But the veteran José Ramón Machado Ventura, 80, will take place, while Ramiro Valdes will resume the No. 3 role. Both have worked with the Castro brothers since at least the 1950s.

Raul Castro discussed the apparent contradiction in his closing speech. "We have kept several veterans of the historic generation, and it is logical from the consequences of the errors that have been made in this area," he was quoted by the Associated Press said in his closing speech. "These have stolen us a rear bench of mature substitutes with enough experience to take on the top positions of the country.".

Two young politicians were appointed to executive positions, including Marino Murillo, who oversees economic reform in Cuba. They could later groomed first positions. And even only rhetoric is a change that Mr. Smith sees as important.

"" At least they speak of the need to highlight the young generation, and do not have the same leaders decade after decade "says Mr. Smith." "" At least it is a sign encouraging that [Raul Castro] is talking about. ?

The Congress was the first in 14 years and comes in the midst of the economic changes that Raul Castro has made, including the announcement last fall that half million jobs a million State will be reduced. Delegates debated some 300 economic proposals, but few details were released. Instead, they stressed their commitment to future changes.

"It could have been a Congress that declared new policies with annexes to them... who appointed a bunch of new people," said Philip Peters, an expert at the Institute of Lexington from Cuba. "Instead of this he was a Congress who expressed commitments for future action."

Woods way fighting on board the names of next generation Leader

McIlroy, the age of 21 years Ireland in North, maintained its advance from round opening with a balance and sometimes stirring three-under-by 69 which gives it a score of 36 holes of 10-under 134. He completed about 4: 30 p.m. and seemed by far the largest name among potential leaders to the mark at Midway.

But Woods hid six groups behind McIlroy, and with birdies on holes 10, 13, 14, 15, 18th, Woods carded a back-nine 31 and a score of second round of six - under 66. He had nine birdies on the whole.

The galleries of Masters, reserved and sometimes indifferent to Woods Thursday when he shot a 71 one-less, have been wildly cheering as he approached the 18th green.

When he made his last putt from 12 feet, Woods was just three shots behind McIlroy and third ex ?quo with k. j. Choi.

Second place at eight was less Jason Day, an Australian aged 23.

"I myself have played in the Championship," said Woods, who seemed in danger of not having the Cup while three bogies in the first seven holes. "There is a long way to go, but it feels good." I have been patient with some of the things that I worked on, and it's nice to see some results. And energy of the crowd is immense and infectious.

The leader board was filled with players 30 years or less, including Alvaro Quiros, 28, who was six sous and Ricky Barnes, 30, and Rickie Fowler, 22, five slots.

Woods, said the youth movement made him feel old, but he was looking forward to the competition.

"I try to put myself in the mix come Sunday," he said. "" "". But it is the next generation. It is good to see these guys out there playing with good enthusiasm and zest for the game. There is a whole crop of guys at this age. This generation is going to be fun to watch as they age. ?

Woods countered what has become a familiar model for him in its touring successfully to Augusta National - he birdied each 5 sec. In 64 rounds of game masters, Woods is now 124 sub on the 5 sec.

"My goal was now to be same by on the front and two as the nine back, said Woods."

Woods was an as the by after nine holes.

"When I came on the back nine, I got hot", he said, smiling. "I got to a point where I knew exactly where I wanted to hit the golf ball and pretty much did just that."

Woods birdied the 10th hole difficult by hitting a sand wedge to 10 feet and making the putt. 14, Its Launcher wedge stopped 18 inches from the hole for another birdie. 15, His second shot for the 5 on the Green, 35 feet from the hole, but he chipped on and converted the putt short birdie.

McIlroy, who had four birdies and a bogey, calmly handled the day of its second consecutive features of the leader. Playing with Fowler and Day, McIlroy has spent much of his time, smile and laugh with its partners. The Group was 15 strokes under the per round.

"We have fed off the coast of the other," McIlroy said. "You could say that the crowd was really behind us on the back nine." "And Jason was really low."

But McIlroy said he was not intimidated by the prospect of holding to its advance, even if Woods was lurking.

"I expect in this area and at some point I beat them before", he said.

Day shot a 64, matching Woods 31 on the back nine. And he said that he liked to be known in what was a popular pairing.

"I am also the oldest, which is a little bizarre, he said." I noticed these guys walk awfully fast. But I got some attention towards the end. Nothing that these two get. I told them on the first hole that I could have started to pay people shouting my name. Everyone was shouting them. ?

Day should he win, was to become the first Australian to win the masters Championship.

McIlroy will play the third round with day last Saturday, starting at 14 h 45 Choi is paired with Woods.

On a packed talent and youth leader board, there were also three other big winners in the running. Geoff Ogilvy, open to the United States champion in 2007, fired his second successive 69 and was tied with Quiros six slots. Fred Couples, who is 51 and was the 1992 masters field, was five slot after rounds of 71 and 68. Tied with Couples has y. e. Yang, who won the 2009 hepatitis Championship after a last lap duel with Woods.

Golfers with a two score above 145 Tower have been cut off from the tournament. This score record for Cup ties lowest in masters history. The Cup was 145 five times, most recently in 2009.
