A fundamental measure of the State of preparation, the Forces of the free Libya, as the rebels call themselves, are miserably underequipped: they have many more volunteers than rifles.
Price of Kalashnikov in eastern Libya pointing to shortages in war - some veterans said they were paid more than $2,000 for their weapon, several times a typical price. At the headquarters of Misurata, many rebels at the front were not firearms and expect that a friend in the fall prior to joining the fight.
Those with modern weapons are gathered in formations mixed with weapons that either need different training, need different types of ammunition, or both.
It is not uncommon to see a group of rebels with widely mixed weapons: a different NATO FN FAL rifle, two standard classes Kalashnikov, a Soviet provenance Degtyaryov machine gun at the beginning and maybe a rifle bolt of before the second world warsuch as the Carcano rifles or specimens from the old line of Lee-Enfield.
