New York (CNN) - remains found Monday on Long Island, New York, have been identified as a human being, the police said Tuesday.

The remains, with a human skull found Monday, were found as authorities investigate a serial killer assumed operating in the region. Police have not confirmed whether the most recent remains are related to the other eight sets of human remains found in Suffolk County, just east of the County of Nassau.

The skull was found on the periphery of a bird sanctuary in the town of Oyster Bay. The County of Nassau police officer James Imperial said Tuesday that he had been positively identified as a human being, with the other remains. Those who are found about four hours before the skull by a New York City police officer state and his dead dog, about a kilometre and a half away.

The discoveries came on the first day that authorities probing the death of several young women pickled the area for evidence. The other remains in the County of Suffolk, were found about five miles from the sites of the discoveries of Monday.

"He has been very surprising, all of this has been," Lieutenant Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department told journalists Monday. "It's just incredible that we will find these things." Obviously, we have much work to do. ?

Investigators are working on the assumption that one person is responsible for the death. Four victims that have been identified to date, all announced services of prostitution on Web sites such as Craigslist, authorities said.

"Collectively, we want to bring to justice the animal who has obviously taken the life of a number of people," said Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano Monday.

The authorities speak not what kind of remains were found Monday, and Smith did not detail the condition of the skull found in the afternoon.

But police have said that the body discovered earlier are in various stages of decomposition, which at least one of which could be he y as long as two years, according to the Commissioner of Police County of Suffolk Richard Dormer.

The remains included four women bodies found in December stuffed in the bushes along a quarter mile long sea front band. Last week, three bodies were discovered a few kilometres from the other, fueling speculation that they could be the work of a serial killer. A woman's body was found March 29 off the coast of Ocean Parkway, West of Cedar beach.

Missing woman that prompted authorities to launch research - 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert - has not yet been identified.

K-9 units and diving teams had been added to the search operation to locate Gilbert, who has been seen living in may in the Gilgo Beach area.

The Sisters of said Gilbert that Shannan is an attendant who was visiting a customer. They said that she went to the House of the man and called 911, stating that someone is attempting to injure.

Several neighbours also called 911, say witnesses.

Police came more than 30 minutes later, but by Gilbert then disappeared and it has never been heard again.

"You want to believe that everything was OK with it," said Sherre Gilbert. "But at the same time so much time has passed it is impossible to really think that she is still alive.".

Sherre Gilbert said even if his sister is never found, the research has led to a positive result: the discovery of another body of women.

Some residents of the region, at the same time, said Tuesday that the macabre discoveries have left the shaken.

"It is just crazy, said Walter Arnold, 65, who - with his wife Dolores - raised five children in a House on Long Island West Gilgo Beach." My wife is scared to come home for the first time. My daughter is frightened. "It is simply horrible".
